West Virginia Bans Seven Food Dyes

House Bill 2354 deems seven food dyes unsafe and prohibits their use as an ingredient in any meal served in West Virginia schools beginning Aug. 1. The same dyes, plus preservatives butylated hydroxyanisole and propylparaben, must not be contained in food for sale in the state beginning Jan. 1, 2028.
